2003年美国东部时间7月25日(北京时间7月26日)，美国科学家研制出世界上最小的电动转子，这种采用纳米技术的电动转子只是人体头发直径的二千分之一。该发动机的研制成功标志着纳米技术进入一个新的里程碑。

　　该发动机的电动转子中有一个金质薄片，金质薄片放置在采用多壁碳纳米管技术的轮轴上。在较大电压工作状态下，金质薄片可以自由转动。在恒定电压工作状态下，金质薄片可以恒定速度转动。负责此项研究的美国加利福尼亚大学伯克利校区亚历克斯·泽特尔(Alex Zettl)称，“当我第一次用电子显微镜观察到多壁碳纳米管的图像时，便立即产生一个将多壁碳纳米管技术应用至电动装置的构想。”

　　在这个发动机研制之前，发动机的转子体积很大或是很不实用，而且电动机中需要激光或是磁铁。生物的分子发动机比该发动机还要小，但必须在特定条件下才能工作。泽特尔研制的纳米管电动转子很容易发动，并以高速运转。可以在较广的温度范围内工作，能适应不同的工作环境，包括高度真空和强烈的化学条件。

　　该发动机可以迅速转变光信号。泽特尔称，“该项技术的研制成功令人兴奋不已。我们确信这项研制成果将有很好的发展前景。”
